Most people don’t get to choose their moving date. Property chains, tenancy end dates, and job starts all have a louder vote than personal preference. But if you do have any flexibility, knowing the best time to move house in the UK can save you several hundred pounds and a fair amount of stress. This guide walks through the seasonality, the day-of-week pricing, and the dates worth avoiding entirely.
The cheapest months to move house
UK removals demand follows a clear seasonal pattern. Summer is the busiest period of the year, by some distance. Families try to move during school holidays so children change schools cleanly. House sales completed in spring tend to settle in early summer. Universities and rental cycles add another layer of summer demand.
Winter is the opposite. January, February, and November are the quietest months for most removals firms, and that quietness translates to lower prices and far better date availability.
A typical pattern through the year:
- January and February: quietest months, best prices, broadest date choice
- March: demand starts to climb as spring property sales pick up
- April: busy around the Easter break, then steady
- May: the run-up to peak season, expect to book 4 to 6 weeks ahead
- June, July, August: peak season, premium pricing, book early or compromise on date
- September: still busy, especially the first fortnight
- October: demand softens, prices ease
- November: quiet again, often a sweet spot for value
- December: quiet for most of the month, then frantic in the final week before Christmas
If you’re picking a month for value alone, January, February, and November are the strongest candidates. Removals firms have spare capacity, the diary is open, and crews are typically less rushed.
The cheapest weeks within any month
Within a given month, the pattern repeats. The end of the month is the busiest period for UK removals, because most property completions are timed to the last working day before mortgage payments roll over. Rental tenancies tend to end on the same dates.
That makes the last week of the month, and especially the last Friday, the single most expensive slot in the diary. If you can shift your move to the second or third week of the month, you’ll usually find better prices and more options on crew size, vans, and start time.
The middle of the month is often noticeably cheaper than either end, and it’s where date-flexible movers should aim first.
The cheapest days of the week
Day of week matters as much as week of month.
- Friday is the busiest day in the UK removals calendar. Solicitors push for Friday completions because it gives buyers and sellers the weekend to settle in. Removals firms know this and price accordingly.
- Saturday is also busy but slightly cheaper than Friday, and a Saturday move buys you Sunday for unpacking before the working week.
- Tuesday and Wednesday are typically the cheapest days. Crews are available, vans are in the yard, and firms are happy to discount mid-week to fill the diary.
- Monday and Thursday sit somewhere between the two ends, usually decent value.
If your completion or tenancy timing is flexible, asking your solicitor or landlord whether a Tuesday or Wednesday move is possible is one of the easiest ways to reduce your removals bill without changing anything else about your plans. Dates worth avoiding
A few specific dates and date ranges drive prices up sharply or close availability altogether.
- Bank holiday weekends. Most removals firms either don’t operate on bank holidays or charge a premium. The weekends either side are also busy because the bank holiday creates a longer window for buyers to settle in. The 2026 bank holidays in England and Wales are Good Friday and Easter Monday in early April, the early May bank holiday, the late May bank holiday, the August bank holiday at the end of August, plus Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Avoid the weekends adjacent to these where you can.
- The last working day of the month. Especially the last Friday. Premium pricing, narrower choice on crew size and start time, and less flexibility if anything runs late.
- Late June and the first half of July. Peak family-move season, particularly around school year-end. Book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead if your dates land here.
- The week before Christmas. Removals diaries clear early in December, then a small surge of “get it done before Christmas” moves drives prices up in the final week.
- University moving weeks. In Leicester (and any university city), late June and early July see a surge of student-related moves, plus the September move-in week. It’s not directly competing for the same crews as family removals but it tightens the market.
If your move date is in any of these windows and you have flexibility, even shifting by a week or two can change the price meaningfully.
When the best time isn’t the cheapest time
Cost isn’t the only consideration. A few non-financial factors push some movers towards specific seasons regardless of price.
- Families with school-age children often prefer late July or August so the move sits cleanly in the school holidays and the children start at the new school in September.
- Garden lovers sometimes move in spring or early autumn so they can plant straight away or settle the garden before winter.
- Buyers of period properties with damp risk often prefer to move in late spring or early summer, giving the property a dry season to acclimatise.
- Anyone moving into a newbuild is at the mercy of the developer’s completion date, which the weather can affect more than people realise.
There’s also the practical matter of daylight. A November move with a late completion can mean unloading the van in the dark, which is slower, less safe, and harder on the crew. An August move offers a 14-hour daylight window. If you’re in a long chain or moving a big property, summer’s long days are an underrated benefit.
Booking lead times by season
Whatever month you choose, booking earlier than you think you need to is the single most useful planning decision.
- January, February, November: 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually enough
- March, April, October: 4 to 6 weeks ahead
- May, September: 6 to 8 weeks ahead
- June, July, August: 8 to 12 weeks ahead, longer if you’re after a specific Friday or end-of-month date
Removals diaries fill from the back of the calendar forwards. The earlier you confirm your date, the more flexibility you have on crew size, van allocation, and the start time of the move. Our local house removals team carries out free surveys across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland, north Northamptonshire, south Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and across to Rugby. The survey itself isn’t time-sensitive, you can have it done well before you’ve fixed an exact date, and one of our team will talk you through the dates that are likely to save you money. If you’d like to map booking against the wider plan, our moving house checklist sets out an 8-week countdown.
What we’d suggest if your dates are flexible
If you have full flexibility (most often the case for chain-free buyers, retirees downsizing, and people moving from rented accommodation), the cheapest, calmest move in the UK is roughly:
- Mid-week, ideally a Tuesday or Wednesday
- Mid-month, the second or third week
- In January, February, or November
That combination puts you in the quietest window of the quietest months, on the quietest day of the week. Crews are less stretched, prices are better, and the chances of the day running smoothly increase noticeably.
If your dates are constrained by a chain, ask your solicitor what the realistic flexibility is. Even shifting from a last-Friday completion to a mid-month Wednesday can save meaningful money.
